Final Size (with Bleed)

Width:8.750"
Height:11.250"

This is the size you should create in your design software (Figma, Illustrator, etc.)

Pixels at 300 DPI

Width:2,625px
Height:3,375px

Use these pixel dimensions when creating frames in Figma for print-ready designs.

Calculation Formula:

Final Width = 8.5 + (0.125 × 2) = 8.750"
Final Height = 11 + (0.125 × 2) = 11.250"
Bleed is multiplied by 2 because it's added to both sides (left + right, top + bottom)

What is Bleed?

Bleed is the extra area around your design that extends beyond the final trim size. It ensures that when the printed piece is cut to size, there are no white edges if the cut is slightly off-center.

Standard bleed is 0.125 inches (1/8") or 3mm. Your design should extend into this bleed area with background colors or images—never place important text or elements in the bleed zone.

Three Zones:
  • Bleed Area: Extra space for cutting tolerance
  • Trim Line: Where the final piece will be cut
  • Safe Zone: Keep important text/logos here (0.125" inside trim)

How to Use This Calculator

1

Enter Trim Size

Input your final printed size (the size after cutting). Choose inches or millimeters based on your preference.

2

Set Bleed Amount

Enter your bleed amount or use the quick presets. Standard bleed is 0.125" (1/8 inch) or 3mm.

Understanding Bleed, Trim, and Safe Zones

Bleed Zone (Red)

The bleed area is the extra space around your design that extends beyond the final cut line. Background colors, patterns, and images should extend into this area. If the cutting is slightly off-center, you won't have white edges.

Standard Bleed: 0.125 inches (1/8") or 3mm

Trim Line (Blue)

The trim line (also called cut line) is where your printed piece will be cut to its final size. This is the actual size of your finished product. The area outside the trim line will be cut off during finishing.

Example: An 8.5" × 11" business flyer will be cut exactly at 8.5" × 11"

Safe Zone (Green)

The safe zone (also called margin or live area) is the area inside the trim line where all important content should be placed. Keep text, logos, and critical design elements at least 0.125" (3mm) inside the trim line to prevent them from being cut off.

Rule: Keep important content 0.125" (3mm) or more inside the trim line

Bleed Design Best Practices

✅ DO's

  • Extend background colors and images into the bleed area
  • Keep all text and logos at least 0.125" inside the trim line
  • Use high-resolution images (300 DPI minimum)
  • Add crop marks to show where to cut
  • Request a proof print before full production

❌ DON'Ts

  • Don't place important text in the bleed zone
  • Don't place logos right on the trim line
  • Don't use white borders instead of extending backgrounds
  • Don't ignore your printer's specific bleed requirements
  • Don't forget to convert to CMYK for print
